How Does Baseer OCR Support Enterprises, Researchers, and Developers?

Organizations store a significant portion of their knowledge in PDF documents, financial reports, contracts, administrative forms, and scanned records. However, having this information in digital files does not necessarily mean it is structured, machine-readable, or ready to be processed by intelligent systems.

The challenge of processing Arabic documents extends beyond recognizing characters and words. It involves understanding the structure of the page: Where does a heading begin? What is the correct reading order of paragraphs? Which column does a number belong to? And how can the relationships between data elements within tables be preserved?

At MISRAJ, we developed Baseer OCR to address these challenges using a Vision-Language Model (VLM) specialized in understanding Arabic documents and converting them into structured Markdown content.

How Does Baseer Work Technically?

Baseer relies on visual document understanding rather than treating a page as a sequence of disconnected text lines.

The model was developed from a 3B-parameter foundation model and fine-tuned using hundreds of thousands of image-text pairs, including real Arabic documents and diverse synthetic data covering different fonts and page layouts.

Its core capabilities include:

  • Document Layout Understanding: Identifying headings, paragraphs, lists, and reading order, including in multi-column documents.
  • Table Structure Recognition: Representing tables in HTML to preserve rows, columns, and their structural relationships, including merged cells.
  • Markdown Conversion: Producing clearly structured text that can be processed, indexed, and integrated into software applications.
  • Specialized Content Processing: Representing scientific equations using LaTeX and identifying certain non-textual elements, such as images and watermarks.

The objective is not simply to produce readable text, but to generate outputs that preserve as much of the original document's structure and context as possible.

Where Does Baseer Deliver Practical Value?

1. Government Agencies and Enterprise Administration

Government agencies and enterprise departments manage forms, official decisions, circulars, and archived documents that vary in formatting and scanning quality.

Baseer helps digital transformation and document management teams extract and prepare content for indexing, searching, and classification, reducing the need for manual data entry.

Its outputs can also be integrated into enterprise document processing workflows, while maintaining human review for sensitive information.

2. Banks, Insurance Companies, and Financial Institutions

In financial documents, recognizing numbers without understanding their positions is insufficient. The meaning of an amount can change if it becomes disconnected from its corresponding line item, reporting period, or column heading.

Baseer helps extract financial tables and text fields while preserving their structural relationships.

This enables data teams to use the extracted information for reconciliation, analysis, and validation, subject to appropriate quality assurance controls.

3. AI and Data Engineering Teams

Many Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) applications begin by converting documents into indexable content.

However, when text is extracted in the wrong reading order or table structures are lost, these errors can propagate into subsequent stages, including chunking, embedding, and retrieval.

Baseer provides structured outputs that can serve as inputs to knowledge preparation pipelines.

This helps engineering teams build knowledge bases that more accurately reflect the structure of the original documents, while retrieval quality remains dependent on subsequent processing and evaluation stages.

4. Universities, Researchers, and Digital Libraries

Arabic books, research papers, and educational materials often contain elements that are difficult to preserve when converting scanned pages into plain text, including footnotes, tables, mathematical equations, and multi-column layouts.

Baseer helps digitize these resources and generate structured content that can be reviewed, edited, and indexed.

This facilitates their reuse in academic research and dataset development, while extracted text should still be verified before being used in scholarly citations.

5. Developers and Software Companies

For developers, the value of OCR goes beyond displaying extracted text on a screen. What matters is the ability to pass that output into another application.

Through Markdown and HTML outputs, along with the ability to leverage an API, developers can integrate Baseer into document processing pipelines.

These pipelines can support digital archiving systems, search tools, and applications built around Arabic document analysis.

How Do We Measure Extraction Quality?

We do not evaluate OCR performance based solely on character recognition accuracy. Correctly recognized words do not necessarily mean that the relationships within a document have been preserved.

That is why, at MISRAJ, we developed Misraj-DocOCR, a benchmark designed to evaluate models on diverse Arabic documents and measure both extraction accuracy and the quality of structural representation.

This approach enables evaluation at the text, table, and formatting levels rather than relying exclusively on comparisons of extracted characters.

At MISRAJ, our goal is to bridge the gap between possessing Arabic documents and being able to unlock the knowledge they contain.

As the quality and structure of extracted content improve, organizations can more effectively use that information for digital archiving, data analysis, knowledge base development, and intelligent applications.
